The Philadelphia Union play in the Eastern Conference of Major League Soccer. The other teams in the Union's conference include Atlanta United FC, New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC, D.C. United, New York City FC, New England Revolution, Chicago Fire, Montreal Impact, Columbus Crew SC, Orlando City SC, and FC Cincinnati.

Major League Soccer welcomed the Union into the league as an expansion team in 2008. The Union became the 16th team in MLS and played its first season in the league in 2010. The Union lost 2-0 to the Seattle Sounders in its first ever MLS game on March 25, 2010. But the Philadelphia soccer team bounced back and won its home opener 3-2 against D.C. United on April 10. Sebastien Le Toux scored the first goal in Philadelphia Union history against the United.

The Philadelphia Union play home games at Talen Energy Stadium. The Philadelphia Union stadium is a soccer-specific venue that opened on June 27, 2010. The stadium holds 18,500 people for soccer games and has a natural grass field. Sebastien Le Toux also scored the first goal at Talen Energy Stadium.

Philadelphia Union jerseys feature the colors navy blue and gold, which were chosen because they represent the colors of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

In its 10 seasons in Major League Soccer through 2019, the Union have made it to the MLS Cup playoffs four times. Philadelphia advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2011, but lost to the Houston Dynamo 3-1 in aggregate. The Union made it to the conference semifinals again in 2019, but lost to Atlanta United FC 2-0.

The Philadelphia Union have also had success in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where the team has been runner-up three times. In 2014, the Union fell to the Seattle Sounders 3-1 in the U.S. Open Cup final. Philadelphia made it back to the U.S. Open Cup final the following season, in 2015. Playing against Sporting Kansas City, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie after regulation and overtime and Kansas City went on to win 7-6 on penalty kicks. In 2018, the Union fell to the Houston Dynamo 3-0 in the U.S. Open Cup final.

Sebastien Le Toux played for the Philadelphia Union from 2010-2011 and from 2013-2016. During that time, the French forward became the club's all-time leader in both goals (50) and assists (50). Defender Raymon Gaddis has appeared in the most games for the Union. Through the 2019 MLS season, Gaddis had played in 206 regular season games for the Philadelphia Union.
