In its first season in the NWSL in 2013, Sky Blue FC finished with a record of 10-6-6. That was good enough for a fourth-place finish in the regular season, and the club qualified for the playoffs. In its semifinal game against the Western New York Flash, Sky Blue FC fell 2-0.
In 2014, Sky Blue FC went 9-7-8 and finished in sixth place in the NWSL and missed the playoffs. Nadia Nadeem and Kelley O'hara tied for the team's goal scoring lead that season with seven goals each.
Sky Blue FC finished with a losing record in 2015 (5-7-8) and finished eighth in NWSL. The club improved to 7-5-8 in 2016 and finished seventh in 2016. The following season, in 2017, Sky Blue FC was 10-3-11 and sixth in the league. In 2018, the soccer team finished in last place in NWSL with a record of 1-6-17. In 2019, Sky Blue improved slightly, going 5-5-14 and coming in eighth place out of nine teams.
The Sky Blue FC stadium is Yurcak Field. The soccer team has played its games there since 2009. It is a venue designed specifically for soccer that can hold up to 5,000 people. Yurcak Field is located on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Famous players who have been on the Sky Blue FC roster include Carli Lloyd. In addition to playing for Sky Blue FC, Lloyd is also a member of the United States Women's National Team. She has helped the USWNT win gold medals at the Olympics in 2008 and 2012. She also led the United States to championships at the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015 and 2019. Lloyd captained the U.S. at the Women's World Cup in 2015 and became the first player to score three goals in a Women's World Cup final when she had a hat trick in the U.S.'s 5-2 victory over Japan. Lloyd first played for Sky Blue FC for one season in 2010. She rejoined the team in 2018.
